The reduction of Russia's influence in Syria may become a key factor in changing the relationship between Ukraine and Israel, which has previously been cautious due to the complex ties both countries have with Moscow.
This was stated in an interview with Fox News Digital by Yuli Edelstein, head of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Security Committee and a member of the ruling Likud party. He emphasized that the situation has changed, and Israel must take a step forward, as there are now real opportunities for deepening cooperation.
"Israel needs to be more involved in supporting Ukraine. The situation has changed; it’s time for Israel to take a step forward," he added.
Prior to this, Israel had long balanced its relationships with Russia, which supports Iran and various proxy groups in Syria, and Ukraine, which seeks military support. Despite significant public support for Ukraine in Israel, the government had remained cautious, refraining from providing high-tech military aid to Kyiv. However, with the diminishing role of Russia in Syria, Ukraine's ambassador to Israel, Yevhen Korniychuk, stated that Israel can no longer justify its caution and must actively support Ukraine.
Israeli defense expertise, particularly in missile systems and drones, could be extremely beneficial for Ukraine in the context of war. Edelstein also noted that Israel is interested in cooperating with Ukraine, especially on defense issues, as Ukraine has become an important testing ground for the latest technologies in real combat conditions. He remarked that Israel had previously missed the opportunity to take advantage of these circumstances.
