During the meeting, the President of France is expected to share plans for an international peacekeeping mission aimed at preventing violations of the ceasefire by Russia in the event of a peace agreement with Ukraine.
According to former NATO Deputy Secretary General Camille Grand, during a recent meeting, Macron discussed with newly elected US President Donald Trump the possibility of European involvement in ensuring Ukraine's security.
France has proposed sending a peacekeeping contingent to the country, consisting of five brigades, or about 40,000 military personnel. One of the brigades could be commanded by Poland, which would help ensure stability along Ukraine's western borders.
The idea of the peacekeeping mission is based on an analysis of three potential security guarantee models for Ukraine. The first involves Ukraine joining NATO, but this option is hindered by Russian aggression on parts of the country's territory, as well as opposition from the United States and Germany. The second model is the continuous supply of weapons to Ukraine, but its effectiveness depends on the financial capabilities of Western countries.
"The third is the 'Korean' model: an international peacekeeping mission that has safeguarded the demarcation line between South and North Korea for over 70 years. It is on this third model, incorporating elements of the first and second, that security guarantees for Kyiv should be based," the article in Rzeczpospolita states.
Grand notes that it is important to involve as many countries as possible in such a mission, even if their participation is symbolic. Germany and the Netherlands may support this initiative after the elections.
