The deployment of a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine is currently impossible due to the lack of conditions for peace, stated Kaja Kallas, the new EU representative for foreign affairs and security policy.
According to Politico, she noted that Russia shows no signs of a desire to achieve peace.
"Firstly, in order to send peacekeepers, there must be peace. And Russia does not want peace... that is very clear," Kallas emphasized.
She highlighted that Moscow continues to display an aggressive stance, leaving no room for negotiations. As evidence, she referenced a recent interview with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, in which he stated that Russia is ready to take any measures to avoid defeat in Ukraine.
At the same time, some European countries are still discussing the possibility of military support for Ukraine. Specifically, they are considering how to act if the U.S. administration under Donald Trump again turns to Europe for assistance in taking on some security commitments for Kyiv. However, these discussions remain limited to conceptual considerations without concrete actions.
Additionally, it is noted that on December 18, 2024, a meeting of European leaders with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and NATO head Mark Rutte will take place in Brussels. It is expected that the talks will address the prospects for a peaceful resolution of the conflict and the potential deployment of peacekeeping forces in Ukraine.
