Sweden has begun active preparations for a potential invasion from Russia, as confirmed by the country's new defense strategy.
According to global media reports, Defense Minister Paul Jonsson announced plans to increase defense spending in Sweden to 2.4% of GDP. This move, as stated by Jonsson, is a response to the rising risks of Russian aggression that cannot be overlooked.
The minister indicated that Russia poses a significant threat not only to Sweden but to NATO as a whole. Despite the challenges faced by Russian troops on the battlefield in Ukraine, Swedish authorities are considering the possibility that the Kremlin may resort to military and political risks.
"Russia's freedom of action is limited, but we cannot let our guard down," Jonsson emphasized.
Increased defense spending will significantly strengthen Sweden's civil defense. Jonsson noted that the country must be prepared for any wartime scenarios. Enhancements to energy infrastructure, transportation networks, and the healthcare system are just a few aspects of the strategy aimed at reducing the likelihood that Sweden will become an easy target for aggression from Russia.
Moreover, the head of Germany's Federal Intelligence Service, Bruno Kahl, also believes that Russia could pose a direct military threat to Germany in the near future, as it is one of Ukraine's key allies. Kahl warned that a major war between Russia and NATO could begin as early as 2030.
