The EU authorities have already begun work on the 16th package of sanctions against Russia. This was stated by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen during a plenary session of the European Parliament.
Last week, we adopted our 15th package of sanctions. It includes measures against the Russian shadow fleet and circumvention channels, while preparations for the 16th package are already underway.
Von der Leyen noted that the sanctions are already having a negative impact on the Russian economy.
The ruble is at its lowest level since the start of the war, despite massive countermeasures from the Russian Central Bank. Inflation has reached 70% in some sectors of the Russian economy.
According to her, the EU is sending a very clear message to the Kremlin: "the longer the war lasts, the higher the cost for the Russian economy."
In turn, Radio Free Europe editor for Europe Rikard Jozwiak expects that the 16th package of sanctions will be presented to EU member states in January 2025.
