The administration of U.S. President Joe Biden is set to announce its latest aid package for Kyiv under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI) in the coming days. This package will include remaining funds for the procurement of new weapons for the Ukrainian Armed Forces, as reported by Reuters citing sources.
According to an agency source, the package will include air defense interceptors and artillery ammunition, but the exact contents will be revealed in the coming days. The estimated value of the package is around $1.2 billion.
Under the USAI program, military equipment is procured from the defense industry or partner countries, rather than drawn from Pentagon stocks. This means that the arrival of weapons on the battlefield may take months or even years.
The agency reports that since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russia, the United States has allocated $175 billion in aid to Kyiv, including approximately $61.4 billion for security assistance. About half of this security assistance has come through the USAI program.
The remaining funds were taken from existing military stockpiles through presidential authorities related to drawdowns. It is noted that the remaining presidential drawdown authority stands at $5.6 billion.
Earlier, we reported that the U.S. is considering the possibility of transferring new North Korean units to Russia.
