The elected President of the United States, Donald Trump, does not intend to halt military assistance to Ukraine. He aims to continue supplying arms.
The publication notes that three unnamed sources have reported Trump's intentions to maintain military support for Ukraine.
According to the FT, this move will bolster other Western nations that are deeply concerned about their ability to support and defend Ukraine without Washington's backing.
Journalists have reported that at the beginning of December, senior British officials traveled to Washington to learn about Trump's plans regarding Ukraine.
After their visit, they shared that the elected U.S. President is against Ukraine's accession to NATO and desires an end to the war. However, he simultaneously believes that supplying weapons to Kyiv after a ceasefire would ensure "peace through strength."
Additionally, two sources from the publication revealed that Trump wants NATO countries to demand more than a doubling of defense spending. Currently, Alliance countries are required to allocate 2% of their GDP for defense annually, but the elected U.S. President aims to increase this figure to 5%.
Notably, only 23 out of 32 NATO members currently allocate 2% of their GDP for defense.
