The European Parliament is actively combating Russia's disinformation campaigns. During the debates in Strasbourg on December 17, MEPs discussed a resolution regarding Russian historical manipulations, which will be put to a vote in January.
The EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Kaia Kallas, pointed out that Russia employs the distortion of historical facts as one of the key elements of hybrid warfare.
She also emphasized that such campaigns aim to weaken support for Ukraine, infiltrate European democratic institutions, and undermine societal unity.
Additionally, Polish MEP Arkadiusz Mularczyk from the Conservative group highlighted that the Kremlin deliberately reverses the roles of victim and aggressor.
"Poland knows these mechanisms well. For decades after World War II, Poland was a victim of historical distortion, symbolized by the Katyn massacre — the murder of about 22,000 Polish officers, for which the Soviet Union tried to shift the blame onto others," he noted.
Lithuanian MEP Rasa Juknevičienė compared the current policies of the Russian Federation to Soviet repressions, stressing that the Kremlin uses historical manipulation as a justification for its aggressive war against Ukraine.
At the same time, Croatian socialist MEP Tonino Picula emphasized the need to combat disinformation from Russia.
"The best way to fight disinformation, besides exposing it, is to respond with concrete actions to support Ukraine as much as necessary," he stressed.
It is noted that among the key recommendations of the European Parliament are the exposure of disinformation, support for independent media, and the activation of intelligence operations, such as the East Stratcom Task Force.
Separately, Lithuanian MEP Vytenis Andriukaitis called for equating Putin's ideology with the fascist regime of Mussolini and the Nazi regime of Germany.
