Ukrainian special operations forces successfully repelled an assault by North Korean troops in the Kursk region of the Russian Federation. During a fierce battle, the SSO operators eliminated 21 North Korean soldiers and injured another 40. The footage of the combat was published on Facebook on Wednesday, January 22.
Operators from the 8th Special Purpose Regiment named after Prince Iziaslav Mstislavich, alongside infantry, held back the advance of North Korean forces for eight hours. The Ukrainian defenders utilized firearms and grenade launchers, and snipers were also in action.
By the ninth hour of the battle, the SSO group had only a third of their ammunition left. Despite this, the fighters continued to eliminate enemies. However, considering the depletion of resources, a decision was made to exfiltrate — a tactical maneuver for a safe withdrawal from the battlefield.
The fighters executed a coordinated retreat in two armored Humvee vehicles.
According to data from the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, over the past 24 hours, Russian Armed Forces have carried out 23 airstrikes in the Kursk region, dropping 31 guided aerial bombs. The enemy also conducted 450 shellings, including 16 from multiple rocket launchers. Ukrainian forces repelled seven assaults.
It is worth noting that on January 20, the fighters of the 47th Brigade “Mагура” demonstrated how they, alongside the 82nd Brigade, repelled a mass assault from the Russians in the Kursk region.
On January 21, in Davos, President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that 4 thousand North Korean soldiers who were recruited by Russia for the war against Ukraine have already been eliminated.
