The rented home of married couple 31-year-old Megan Wheatley and 32-year-old Ellis Fleck was engulfed in flames just two hours after their housewarming party. Firefighters reported that the incident was accidental: a hidden light bulb broke in the attic, igniting a carpet on the wall, according to Metro.
It is reported that the family moved from Kent (UK) to a rented house in Grimsby in September of last year. After unpacking their belongings following a tiring journey, the couple went to bed, but less than half an hour later, Megan awoke to a strong smell of smoke and a strange hissing sound.
"The fire alarm didn’t go off, even though the room was extremely hot. We went to the bathroom, and the entire ceiling was already melting. At first, there was panic and shock, but we managed to escape," the victim recounted.
Published photographs reveal that the house is nearly completely destroyed. The total estimated damage amounts to £37,000 (almost 2 million UAH), yet the insurance company agreed to provide only partial compensation of £17,000 (around 887,000 UAH).
Megan and Ellis claim they received almost no support from their landlord, Robert Cooper, owner of Ideal Property Services, despite their assertion that the fire was caused by "his negligence."
A fire inspector later discovered that the smoke alarm had needed replacement as far back as 2016.
The couple had to resign from their new jobs and return to Colchester. They are now hoping to retrieve their belongings from the house that were not damaged in the incident.
"We agreed on a date to do this, but no one showed up to let me in. Now I have lost hope of getting our things back," admits Megan, who has initiated a fundraiser on the GoFundMe platform to cover the remaining damages.
On the other hand, Pedro Casares from Orlando (USA) gained fame online after he managed to save his home from the devastating mega-hurricane "Milton." The man secured the roof of his house with special straps and metal hooks that were anchored eight feet into the cement.
