In the night of January 2, 2025, Russia launched an attack on Ukraine using 72 strike drones of the "Shahed" type and other types of UAVs from the directions of Bryansk, Oryol, Kursk, and Primorsko-Akhtarsk (RF). This was reported by the Ukrainian Air Forces.

According to the agency, as of 08:30, the downing of 47 strike drones of the "Shahed" type and other types of UAVs has been confirmed in the Poltava, Sumy, Kharkiv, Kyiv, Chernihiv, Cherkasy, Kirovohrad, Dnipropetrovsk, Odesa, Kherson, and Mykolaiv regions. A total of 24 enemy imitation drones are considered locally lost (without negative consequences). At the time of writing, one drone was still airborne.

Results of the Russian Attack on Ukrainian Territory

In the sky over the Sumy region on Thursday, January 2, 5 enemy "Shaheds" were shot down. This was reported by the Sumy Regional State Administration.

"Since the beginning of 2025, air defense units in the region have destroyed 10 Russian drones," the agency added.

In the Cherkasy region, five enemy "Shaheds" were also shot down. This was reported by the head of the Cherkasy Regional Military Administration, Ihor Taburets.

"The night in the region was marked by alerts due to enemy UAVs. Our defenders successfully turned five of them into scrap metal. There were no calls to emergency services regarding injuries or property damage," he added.

In the Kirovohrad region, it was reported that drones were shot down over the area, although their number was not specified. It was noted that there were no consequences.

Air defense was also active in the Dnipropetrovsk region. According to the Regional Military Administration, three drones were shot down there.

It was loud in the Kherson region as well. The head of the region, Oleksandr Proskudin, reported that 1 "Shahed-131/136" was destroyed over the territory of the region.

In Mykolaiv, air defense forces successfully destroyed two drones of the "Shahed 131/136" type. This was noted by the chairman of the Mykolaiv Regional State Administration, Vitaliy Kim.

We remind you that on the first day of January, Russia struck Kyiv using strike drones. Debris from the targeted objects was recorded in the Pechersk district of the capital, where a fire broke out in an uninhabited building.

Subsequently, it became known that debris from a UAV landed on the roof of one of the National Bank buildings. The management and staff ensuring the uninterrupted operation of the NBU are working according to approved protocols.

Moreover, during the attack, a Russian "Shahed" nearly hit the Office of the President. According to Marianna Bezuha, this happened because air defense mobile group fighters are being redirected to infantry.

Additionally, as a result of the Russian attack on Kyiv, a Ukrainian neurobiologist, Ihor Zima, along with his wife, died in the Pechersk district. He taught at the "Institute of Biology and Medicine" of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv and led a research group focused on neuro- and psychophysiology.
