Cold apartments, idle trolleys, minimal gas supply: why Ukraine may face a New Year collapse similar to Moldova's.

Due to the suspension of gas supplies to Moldova, the first day of the new year turned into a real communal nightmare. Expert Oleg Popenko highlights the details and warns that a similar situation could arise in Ukraine if preparations for the worst are not made and if the sector continues to be managed in the same old way.
Cold apartments, idle trolleys, minimal gas supply: why Ukraine may face a New Year collapse similar to Moldova's.

The situation in Moldova illustrates what could happen in Ukraine if no action is taken and budget funds are simply squandered:

  • The Moldovan GRES in Transnistria has halted electricity supplies to Moldova since January 1. This plant accounted for 80-90% of the country's energy needs. It has switched to coal, which will last only 50 days;
  • People are complaining that their apartments are turning into freezers, and Moldovans are trying to heat their homes by any means possible;
  • Trolleybuses have stopped operating in the capital of Moldova, and electricity has vanished from both apartment buildings and private homes;
  • The most affected are towns and villages, especially those living in private houses and apartments with independent heating;
  • Transnistria lost heating and hot water as early as the morning, reported "Tirasteploenergo." Gas in apartment buildings remains available, but only for cooking, according to "Tiraspoltransgaz-Transnistria."

This is happening despite the fact that gas for the population in Moldova costs over 30 UAH per cubic meter, which is four times more expensive than in Ukraine, and this has not prevented the outages.

I will reiterate: no matter how high the tariffs are raised, if the authorities are incompetent and foolish, it will not save anyone from gas, electricity, or water outages.
