Three individuals have been arrested in connection with the death of former One Direction member Liam Payne. The 31-year-old singer died after falling from the balcony of the CasaSur Palmero hotel in Buenos Aires on October 16, reports NBS News.
In a statement from Argentina's Attorney General Andres Esteban Madre, it was noted that the investigation uncovered "criminal behavior that led to charges against three individuals for leaving a person resulting in subsequent death, as well as supplying and aiding in the distribution of drugs."
"From the very beginning of the investigation and over the course of several days, exhaustive and thorough actions and measures were taken to determine the circumstances surrounding the artist's death," he remarked.
Sources familiar with the country's judicial system indicate that all three have been arrested and placed under official suspicion. They have not yet been formally charged. If found guilty, they could face up to 15 years in prison.
Among the arrested is a friend of the singer, who is accused of "leaving a person, resulting in death." Although his name has not been disclosed, there is speculation that it may be Rogelio "Roger" Nores, who accompanied Liam in the days leading up to his death. Nores himself denied this information.
The suspects also include two hotel employees who, according to the investigation, supplied Liam with cocaine and other drugs.
Searches were conducted at the homes of all suspects.
Shortly after Payne's death, state prosecutors reported that only alcohol, cocaine, and an antidepressant were found in the deceased's system. Despite earlier speculations, they ruled out the possibility that the pop star committed suicide after falling from the balcony.
During the investigation, law enforcement examined 800 hours of surveillance footage and received several dozen statements from hotel staff, family, friends, and medical personnel. They also analyzed the pop star's mobile phone, the hotel guest registry, and bar and restaurant orders, alongside conducting necessary thanatological and laboratory studies.
Toxicology reports, which have already been shared with Liam's family, indicated that he had consumed alcohol, cocaine, and prescribed antidepressants within the last 72 hours of his life. An autopsy conducted by the Forensic Medical Corps (CMF) concluded that the cause of death was "multiple trauma" and "internal and external bleeding."
Prosecutors confirmed that the injuries "are consistent with those sustained from a fall from a height, and that self-harm of any kind and/or physical intervention by third parties is excluded."
Following the autopsy, experts concluded that Liam may have fallen while in a "semi-conscious or fully unconscious state."
On the eve of the star's body being transported to the UK, it was handed over to his family, allowing them to bury him three weeks after the artist's death.
The singer's father, Jeff Payne, has been in the country where his son passed away over the past few weeks.
