The oldest known photograph of a car, taken in Ukraine, has been published. The image dates back to 1896 and was discovered by experts from the Historical Automobile Club. This is reported by Auto-Consulting.

The photograph was captured in Mykolaiv. It features the Benz Velo from 1896 — the world's first mass-produced automobile. Specifically, this vehicle has a serial number of 437 and is equipped with a 1.05-liter single-cylinder engine producing 2.75 hp. Its maximum speed is 19 km/h.

Interestingly, the first car appeared in Mykolaiv earlier than in Kyiv or Lviv (these cities received cars in 1897). In Ukraine, only Odessa saw cars earlier. For a long time, the Benz Velo was the only car in Mykolaiv, but it suffered from a fire in a garage in 1902.

No one was aware of this photograph until recently. Previously, the oldest photo in Ukraine was thought to be the photo of the Daimler Phoenix, which belonged to the family of Baron von Mekka. This was taken in the village of Kopylov in the Kyiv region in 1898 or 1899.
