A police officer released 13 suspects of violence to celebrate the New Year.

Drunk police officer Titus Firi from Zambia released 13 suspects from custody to attend a New Year's party, resulting in him being placed on the wanted list. This was reported by the Daily Star.

Among the 13 detainees were individuals accused of theft, robbery, and assaults. They are currently still at large and being sought by authorities.

Firi was under the influence of alcohol when he "forcefully took the keys to the cell" from Constable Serah Banda.

"Detective Inspector Firi opened both male and female cells and ordered the suspects to leave, stating that they were free to enter the New Year... Out of the 15 suspects in custody, 13 escaped. After the incident, the officer fled the scene," noted police spokesperson Ray Hamunga.

Meanwhile, former press secretary to the president of Zambia and lawyer Dickson Jer posted on Facebook that he "continues to laugh" at this situation.

"I keep laughing every time I imagine this scenario — it's hilarious!" Jer wrote.

Journalists also recalled that in 1997, High Court Judge Kabazo Chanda ordered the release of 53 individuals who were suspects and deemed dangerous by the police on the eve of New Year.

Judge Chanda was frustrated that some of the suspects had been arrested long before — some as far back as 1992 — yet had never appeared in court.

"Justice delayed is justice denied," he stated at the time.
