Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced his intention to step down as leader of the Liberal Party and resign as soon as a new leader is elected. This was reported by CNN.
Previously, Reuters indicated that Trudeau's decision may be linked to poll results showing a significant gap between the Liberals and Conservatives ahead of the parliamentary elections scheduled for October 2025.
Calls for the Prime Minister's resignation intensified in December when Finance Minister and close ally Chrystia Freeland stepped down. She opposed the increase in government spending proposed by Trudeau, accusing him of "political manipulation."
Trudeau's Career
Justin Trudeau has led the Liberal Party since 2013 and became Prime Minister in 2015. During his tenure, he initiated several reforms, including the legalization of recreational marijuana, changes to the Senate appointment system, and the introduction of a federal carbon tax. In international politics, his government signed several free trade agreements, including with Mexico and the United States, and joined the Paris Climate Agreement.
