Former "Miss England 2009," Bhasha Mukherjee, has been concealing a secret about her appearance since her teenage years — she suffers from female pattern hair loss. The situation worsened to the point that in January of this year, the 28-year-old model flew to Turkey for a hair transplant. This was reported by The Mirror.
"Hair loss in women brings so much shame. Our self-esteem is often tied to femininity, and I felt that firsthand," explains the beauty pageant winner.
Bhasha, who was born in India but moved to Derby at the age of 9, first became aware of her appearance during her teenage years when she realized her hair was not as thick as she desired.
"In the modeling world, it's common to wear extensions and add-ons to create fuller hairstyles. I can't recall a time when I wasn't wearing something to improve their appearance, but it only got worse," she adds.
Mukherjee managed to disguise her hair loss with "smart" styles, such as straightening and curling her locks.
According to experts, the most common cause of hair loss in women is androgenetic alopecia — female-pattern baldness, which is genetically inherited. It can occur at any age after puberty, but is most frequently seen post-menopause.
"It's very different from hair loss in men. I wasn't completely bald, but my locks noticeably thinned, especially at the part. I tried everything. I visited a trichologist, had four injections of my own platelets to boost scalp health, and went through a course of LED therapy. I spent a lot of money trying to save what I had," the British woman shares.
Eventually, she decided to undergo a transplant.
0 1"During the five-hour surgery, I was given local anesthesia, but it caused swelling and a terrible headache. The last two hours were unbearable, and after the procedure, I got sick in the hotel," Bhasha recalls.
Now, nine months post-transplant, the model has re-evaluated her relationship with her appearance.
"Did it solve my problem? It's hard to say. I'm getting used to the new hairline, which doesn't look as natural as I'd hoped. I'm now less focused on my hair overall and have learned to be more patient," adds the former Miss England.
2Meanwhile, 33-year-old Angela Hutchinson from the UK has felt embarrassed about her double chin since her teenage years. Over time, she managed to lose a significant amount of weight, but this did not help eliminate the flaw, leading her to opt for plastic surgery, a decision she has not regretted.
