On October 18, 1356, the Basel earthquake occurred, the largest in Central Europe in recorded history.

Modern seismologists estimate its magnitude to be between 6 and 7.1 (for comparison, the most powerful earthquake in the world, the Great Chilean, was rated at 9.5). In Europe, this event is also known as the Saint Luke's Earthquake, as October 18 is celebrated as the feast day of the evangelist Luke. The Swiss city of Basel suffered the most from the tremors. The destruction was significant, and even more was caused by numerous fires that broke out due to falling wax lamps and torches igniting wooden structures. The earthquake destroyed all major churches and castles within a 30 km radius of Basel. Tremors were felt in Zurich and even parts of Paris. However, the number of casualties was not as high as one might imagine for such events—around 300 people. Basel was subsequently rebuilt in Gothic style.

Church Holiday on October 18

On October 18, the memory of the apostle and evangelist Luke is honored. He was born in the Syrian city of Antioch. He received a good education, mastering, among other things, the art of medicine and painting. Hearing about the teachings and miracles of Jesus Christ, Luke traveled to Galilee. After some time, he became one of the 70 apostles. Saint Luke was in Jerusalem during the last days of Christ's earthly life and likely witnessed the crucifixion of Jesus. On the day of the resurrection, Christ honored the apostle with his appearance and conversation, which Luke later wrote about in his Gospel. After the Ascension, the apostle stayed in Jerusalem for a while, then went back to his native Antioch to preach Christianity. He left Antioch to become a companion of the apostle Paul, preaching with him in Greece and Macedonia. When Paul was imprisoned in Caesarea, Luke remained with him and later followed the apostle to Rome. There, Saint Luke wrote his Gospel and the Book of the Acts of the Apostles. It is highly likely that Luke witnessed the martyrdom of the apostle Paul in Rome. After that, he continued to preach in Italy, Dalmatia, Gaul, and Macedonia. In his old age, the apostle traveled to Egypt, preaching throughout Libya along the way. He then returned to Greece, where he organized churches, ordained priests and deacons, and healed the sick. He died at the age of 84, a martyr’s death. Saint Luke was hanged on an olive tree.
