On November 28, 1974, legendary ex-Beatle John Lennon made his last performance on the big stage. He was a surprise guest at Elton John's Thanksgiving concert held at Madison Square Garden (New York). At that time, live performances were rare for Lennon. His last major concerts took place in New York in 1972 and were charity events to raise funds for patients at the Willowbrook State School psychiatric hospital. Following this, he experienced a period of depression, alcohol issues, marital infidelity, and temporary separation from Yoko Ono.

In early 1974, the press focused more on his drunken escapades than on his music. However, during this difficult time, Lennon once again joined former Beatles Ringo Starr and George Harrison to record the song "I’m the Greatest" for Ringo Starr's album "Ringo." Nevertheless, within a year, Lennon managed to "gather his thoughts" and worked on the album "Walls and Bridges." The album was released on September 26 in the U.S. and in October in the UK. One of the tracks, "Whatever Gets You thru the Night," led to Lennon's further appearance at Elton John's concert. The ex-Beatle promised his colleague that he would perform together if "Whatever Gets You thru the Night" reached the top of the charts. Lennon himself did not believe it. However, the single topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It was this song that he performed at Elton John's concert, along with "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" and "I Saw Her Standing There."

No one could have imagined that this performance would be Lennon's last. However, in 1975, he decided to take a break from his career due to joyful personal events—after reconciling with Yoko Ono, the couple welcomed their son Sean. The following five years were dedicated to family. His long-awaited return began but ended tragically in 1980. In October, the musician released the single “(Just Like) Starting Over.” In November, he released a double album "Double Fantasy" with songs written in the summer of 1980. He was actively working on the next album, "Milk and Honey," which ultimately became posthumous. On December 8, 1980, Mark Chapman shot Lennon.
