A Chinese company has found itself in controversy for installing surveillance cameras in restrooms to monitor which employees spend too much time on bathroom breaks, subsequently placing offenders on a "wall of shame." This was reported by Oddity Central.
Many Chinese companies have long sought to prevent employees from spending excessive time in the restroom through various means, such as setting countdown timers in stalls or limiting bathroom breaks to one per day.
One tech company based in Shenzhen took it a step further by installing hidden surveillance cameras in restrooms to monitor employee activity, then shaming those who spent too long by publicly posting their screenshots.
A company representative admitted that employees were being monitored in the company's restrooms but claimed that the measure aimed to prevent time wastage during work hours.
"Employees were spending too much time in the restroom, smoking or playing games, which caused inconvenience to other staff. Smoking in the restroom is prohibited, and the goal is to prevent people from lingering there due to video games and other activities," the company stated.
This company's behavior has sparked outrage on social media. Many users accused it of invading employees' privacy and even violating the law.
As journalists noted, this practice is not new in China. A few years ago, a similar incident occurred with another tech company in Xiamen, which also used surveillance cameras to monitor restroom activity and deter lengthy bathroom breaks.
It is worth mentioning that in the UK, highly organized thieves stole 13 mobile toilets.
