Will Doom: The Dark Ages mark the end of the series? The developers have provided their answer.

The latest installment of the Doom franchise from id Software will not conclude with the release of Doom: The Dark Ages, reports Gamespot.

"This part is not meant to serve as an ending to anything. Right now, our focus is solely on the upcoming release, but Doom: The Dark Ages is not a full stop at the end of a sentence," stated creative director Hugo Martin.

While id Software has no plans for what comes after Doom: The Dark Ages, they also do not rule out the possibility of more games set in the same universe.

It is known that Doom: The Dark Ages will be released on PC on May 15, as well as on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Additionally, the developers have already confirmed that there will be no multiplayer mode in the upcoming release.

As the final part of one of the greatest shooter series of all time, Doom: The Dark Ages seemed like a strong candidate for a multiplayer mode. However, during the Xbox Developer Direct, Bethesda and id Software announced that there will be no such mode in the upcoming game.

According to executive producer Marty Stratton, the new game is entirely focused on creating an "epic campaign."

"We made this decision early on to fully dedicate ourselves to the campaign. It is our largest, most extensive, and most epic campaign of all time, and we are very pleased with our decision," said Stratton.

Project lead Hugo Martin stated that the choice to concentrate on a single-player campaign allowed the team to incorporate some of the boldest twists in The Dark Ages, including the ability to fight using mechs.

"That's why we were able to add both a dragon and the Atlan mech. We focused solely on the single-player campaign and elevated that experience for players," Martin added.

As a reminder, the system requirements for Doom: The Dark Ages have been revealed. As expected, players will need an incredibly powerful computer to play with maximum Ultra graphics settings at 4K resolution. A fairly robust machine will also be required to run the game at minimum settings.
