On the night of February 24, Ukrainian drones targeted the Ryazan oil refinery located within Russian territory. The explosions resulted in a fire. This was reported by the Russian publication Vaza.
It was noted that several drones were detected flying over the area, heading towards the refinery in Ryazan.
According to local residents, they heard multiple explosions. The air defense system was activated.
As stated by the governor of the Ryazan region, Pavel Malkov, air defense forces destroyed two drones over the region.
"The Ministry of Defense's air defense forces have eliminated two UAVs over the territory of the Ryazan region. Due to falling debris, a fire occurred at one of the facilities. Preliminary information indicates that there are no casualties, and the material damage is being assessed. Emergency services are on the scene," — he wrote.
In the Russian Ministry of Defense, it was reported that 22 drones were shot down during the night.
"During the past night, air defense forces intercepted and destroyed 22 Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles: 16 UAVs over the territory of the Oryol region, three UAVs over the Bryansk region, two UAVs over the Ryazan region, and one UAV over the territory of the Republic of Crimea," — the statement said.
As noted by the ASTRA publication, the Ryazan refinery has been attacked for the third time since the beginning of 2025. The Ryazan Oil Refining Company was targeted on the night of January 24 and again on the night of January 26.
Director of the Ukrainian Center for Counteracting Disinformation, Andrey Kovalenko, pointed out that the attacked Ryazan refinery is one of the largest in Russia.
"The refinery has a processing capacity of 17.1 million tons of oil per year, making it one of the top five refineries in the Russian Federation. It produces gasoline, diesel fuel, aviation kerosene, fuel oil, and petrochemicals. Aviation fuel is particularly significant, as it is critically important for the front-line aviation of the Russian army and strategic long-range aviation that strikes Ukraine," — he informed.
As noted by the publication, the Armed Forces of Ukraine have attacked at least 27 fuel and energy facilities across 16 regions of Russia since the beginning of 2025.
It should be reminded that on February 20, it was reported that four major Russian oil refineries halted operations following attacks by Ukrainian drones over the past month.
