Hospitals in China are overwhelmed with patients amid a surge in cases of the new HMPV virus. There are concerns that it could lead to a new epidemic, similar to COVID-19.
According to reports, there has been a sudden increase in respiratory illnesses in China over the past few days, which "reminds people of a similar surge during COVID-19."
Media in neighboring countries such as Indonesia, India, and Japan have also warned their citizens to stay informed about the situation in China and to take necessary precautions.
However, official Beijing, as noted by NDTV, is currently downplaying the severity of the illness, describing it as a "seasonal phenomenon in winter."
As international reports have cautioned travelers to reconsider their plans to visit China, Beijing released a press statement to alleviate any concerns.
Thus, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated on Friday that "the peak of respiratory infections generally occurs in the winter season."
"I can assure you that the Chinese government cares about the health of its citizens and foreigners coming to the country," she said, adding that "traveling in China is safe."
In response to questions about overcrowded hospitals and reports of a rise in respiratory illnesses, she mentioned that "the illnesses seem to be less severe and spreading on a smaller scale compared to the previous year" (referring to the coronavirus, - ed).
