In Dublin, veterinarians rescued a 17-year-old goldfish, a Chinese carp, that was on the verge of dying from a malignant tumor. The medical team performed surgery on the fish under anesthesia using an improvised ventilator that supplied oxygen to the patient. This was reported by the publication The Daily Star.
During the surgical procedure, the veterinarian skillfully excised the deadly tumor from the fish's face.
It is noted that the owners of the goldfish, named Merlin, sought help from the veterinarians. Their pet had lived with them for 17 years, but recently a tumor appeared on its head, which began to interfere with the fish's ability to eat properly.
Concerned, the owners took their fish veteran to a clinic in Dublin, where he underwent surgery. The patient was anesthetized, connected to an improvised ventilator system that supplied oxygen, and the growth was removed.
"Merlin's owner was afraid he would have to be euthanized, but we decided to attempt removing the growth, which we suspected was a tumor. The operation itself was quite straightforward, but it was our first case of administering general anesthesia to a fish, which was certainly challenging. The difficult part was bringing Merlin to the correct level of anesthesia by moving him through different water baths with varying levels of anesthetic added to the water," said the veterinarian who performed the operation.
Merlin was anesthetized using water infused with the anesthetic.
The owners of the goldfish are extremely happy, as their beloved pet did not have to be euthanized and will be able to return to a normal life.
Let us remind you that 24-year-old Joe DiMeo from the USA underwent a grueling 23-hour facial and hand transplant surgery. This occurred after he was involved in a horrific car accident and suffered third-degree burns over 80% of his body.
