Law enforcement officials have thwarted a terrorist attack in Dnipro. According to their data, an agent group acting on behalf of the Russian Federation attempted to eliminate a former law enforcement officer, with individuals involved hailing from Kharkiv.
As reported by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), Russians recruited three individuals through a Telegram channel aimed at finding "quick earnings": a 52-year-old nurse from Vinnytsia region, a 26-year-old unemployed man from Kharkiv, and his 20-year-old girlfriend.
“The plan was to eliminate the Ukrainian veteran using a homemade explosive device that the nurse from Vinnytsia was supposed to activate when the man approached his garage. The SBU counterintelligence caught the woman 'in the act' as she was preparing to detonate the explosives using a remote control. A couple of Russian agents from Kharkiv were detained immediately afterward,” law enforcement officials reported.
The SBU established that under enemy instructions, the suspects traveled to Nikopol, where they retrieved explosives from a pre-prepared cache. They then went to Dnipro and left the device in a rented apartment. Following this, both agents returned to Kharkiv to “lie low.”
“Before leaving, the couple hid the apartment keys in a flowerbed near the house for the agent from Vinnytsia. Using this location, the woman retrieved the explosive device and placed it near the designated garage in the yard where the veteran law enforcement officer resides,” the SBU added.
Three probable Russian agents have been detained. They have been informed of their suspicion under part 2 of Article 258 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (attempt to commit a terrorist act). Currently, the suspects are in pre-trial detention. If proven guilty, they face up to 12 years in prison with confiscation of property.
