A Russian soldier forcibly transported a resident of Izium to Belgorod, where he held her captive and sexually assaulted her for a year and a half.
The story of the 21-year-old girl from the Kharkiv region was reported by the head of the investigative department of the National Police in Kharkiv region, Sergey Bolvinov.
When the Russians captured Izium, one of the occupiers tried to court her, and upon being rejected, began to threaten her. The militant intimidated the Ukrainian woman with a weapon, promising to kill her family. Once, he dragged the girl into an empty house and raped her, ordering her not to tell anyone.
In the summer, the Russian decided to take the girl with him to Russia. On the morning of June 13, 2022, the occupier, along with two armed Russians, came to her and ordered her to pack her things. When she refused, he threatened to shoot her entire family on the spot. Thus, the Ukrainian from Kharkiv found herself in sexual slavery in Belgorod, Bolvinov reported.
“There, the occupier locked her in an apartment, took her documents and phone, and came whenever he wanted. For a year and a half, the girl lived as a prisoner. There were iron bars on the windows and balcony, systematic beatings, torture, and rapes. The girl saw no way to escape and, in early 2023, attempted to kill herself by drinking boric acid,” Bolvinov shared.
The kidnapper took the girl to the hospital. There, she told the Russian doctors her story and asked for help. However, as soon as her physical condition improved, the doctors sent her back to her abuser.
The girl miraculously escaped. Her kidnapper turned out to be a deserter, and he was arrested for that.
Only after this could the captive finally flee from Russia. Once back in Ukraine, she received assistance from doctors and psychologists.
The Kharkiv regional prosecutor's office formally charged a 31-year-old Russian soldier with cruel treatment of civilians and violations of the laws and customs of war.
The suspect is a serviceman of the 1st Motorized Rifle Regiment (military unit No. 31135) of the 2nd Motorized Rifle Division of the 1st Tank Army of the Western Military District of Russia, who participated in the capture of Izium.
There are ongoing discussions about declaring the suspect wanted.
“This case is unique; for the first time, we are incriminating the suspect with sexual violence related to the conflict, as well as slavery and illegal deportation,” Bolvinov noted.
