February 19, 1600 witnessed the largest volcanic eruption ever recorded in South America. The Huaynaputina volcano in southern Peru erupted, and it has not erupted since. February 19 marked just the beginning of catastrophic events, which continued in several series until March. Reports indicate that at least 1,000–1,500 people lost their lives due to the eruption. The area around the fiery mountain was covered with a two-meter layer of volcanic rock. This massive event triggered a volcanic winter on Earth. The ash cloud blocked sunlight for an extended period, leading to a decrease in average annual temperature (mainly in the Northern Hemisphere). Consequently, this resulted in floods, famine, and social upheavals in various countries. Climatologists also cite this volcanic eruption as one of the likely causes of the onset of the "Little Ice Age." After the massive fiery eruption, the mountain has been "asleep" for over four hundred years. Today, about 30,000 people live nearby.

In Ukraine, the South American volcano is popular not for its connection to the "Little Ice Age" or its famous eruption but rather due to its striking name – written in Latin as Huaynaputina.
